Hi all. First time chicken steward here. I just received my chicks from My Pet Chicken on Monday. Two Red Stars and one Speckled Sussex. Sadly, the Sussex did not make it. She was injured in shipping and wouldn't eat or drink on her own and well... she just didn't survive. Now the other two are doing great, but since I was so focused on trying to nurse the Sussex back to health, I just didn't notice the difference in the two until today.

Anyway, I'm looking at them and realize that one of them is a lot bigger and her coloring is different. So here's a pic of the two of them - would love to know what you guys think I have!

Yes, those are probably both Red Sex-links. There can be quite a variation in color, even with specific hybrids like RSLs. A lot of reddish/buff breeds look similar as chicks, though, so it is still possible that they are something else. You will know for sure when they are older.

I'm sorry for the loss of your Sussex.

They both look like Red Sex-Links to me. As Bantamlover21 stated, the Red Sex-Link is a hybrid and individual birds can be quite different.

Sorry about your Sussex!

Cool! Thanks so much. And thank you regarding the sussex. She was a cute little thing and I'm sorry I couldn't save her. Might try again in the Spring. Just can't believe how attached I was in just a few days.

Thanks! I wasn't really worried about one of them being a roo. I was just not sure they were both Red Sex Link. The lighter one with a stripe down its back looked so much like the Buff Orpington chicks, I was just checking on that. The more reddish one is feathering out much faster, so I'm guessing she's a bit older or her cross matures faster. Either way, they are both doing really well, so I'm happy!
