Hi I am new to keeping quail and I am hoping someone can answer some questions for me........ I have had 1 male and 3 females together for 1 week and the day we put them together the male mounted the females a few times. But since that day I haven't seen him mount them and I haven't heard him calling. How many times a day would I expect him to mount them? Do the seasons play a factor in this? They are this year's birds, I have seen the foamy secretion when I have picked him up, at what age do the males stop mating? (they are japanese quail) I am a little worried that my stud may not be doing his job!

Thanks for any advice

If he's your only rooster he may not crow. And he may also not have the need to grab the girls when ever he can and mount them. NO competition for him. I have 3 roosters in with my 15 girls and they are constantly running after each other grabbing girls and being nasty. Your might just like to do it in private being s he can. lol

what are you doing with the eggs? if you are eating them you can check and see if he is doing the deed by looking for a tiny white spot on the yolk. IF you find one he's doing ok

Thats great thanks, I have just cracked an egg and there is a definitive white spot, so I think he must be doing his job, and I assume the lack of crowing is, as you say, because there is no competition.

thanks for your advice
