black meat projects

The ducks got home safe, I ended up with 6 of them!

We built another big brooder box in the barn today and moved the chicks in there, they have much more space to move around, so all my black meat project chickens are in my barn atm. Phew!!

We bought 2x4's today and I've been discussing what I'd like my 3rd coop to look like...a row of 3-4 nesting boxes on each side of the coop under the windows and 2-3 brooder boxes underneath the nesting boxes to either brood chicks, ducks, or house/rotate out my roos used for breeding. We have to get it done and enclosed with 1/2" hardware cloth before winter hits...

I took more pictures today of my set up. These are my 2 brooder boxes, made out of old closet doors, hardware cloth, leftover hardwood flooring material and a few 2x4

I'm curious, too.
all my svart hona chicks ended up being boys, and wondering if i should breed them to some black australorps.

Do they really taste better than other chickens? I don't need to raise smaller birds if the taste isn't better.

No updates still? I think i am going to do a FM production project. I prefer dual purpose birds, so i think i will cross my Yeonsan Ogye and Cemani to some Rhode island reds. They have a brown egg laying cycle of 250 plus eggs a year and are large enough to butcher

Hi, I just thought I'll chip in on this black meat project.

My mom has been raising these black skin chicken for who knows how long. She said they use to raise them back in southeast Asian. Their bodies are structured like a Thai chicken, with black skin, and beautiful feathering pattern. I think they have a decent amount of meat, nothing like a Cornish cross of course. They are not all back. Many people refer them as "Hmong chickens".

These chickens seem to be harder to find, unless you know someone who has them locally.

I'll attach some pictures.
