Still keeping the furnace off here by virtue of the wood stove. I like to see how late in the year we can keep it that way. I have the thermostat set at 62 right now. I won't let it get that low. I just haven't changed it to 65 yet! :gig
Our thermostat is set to 78 right now... for the A/C, lol!! So we're still running A/C here. It even comes on in the nighttime. Early next week is supposed to hit 99F. Just planted some peas today.

I do sometimes miss the wood burning stove we had when I was growing up. So cozy and makes me think of winter holidays with family. Now I use a no-heat electric fireplace for Christmas/Fall/Winter ambience. Clearly not the same, but the best I can do, lol. 🔥

Our house came with a fireplace.

New houses here are not allowed to have a fireplace installed. We do like to use the fireplace in the winter.

We may need to use AC next week too. We usually start using heat in late October.

That, to me, is utter insanity! People have been using fire for heat for our entire history. Glad you have a fireplace. Anyone that lives where it can get cold, should have the ability to have an alternative heat source that does not rely on electricity.

The claim is that burning wood adds to pollution in the Sacramento Valley. The valley is plenty big enough though that fireplaces and pellet stoves would not add that much too the air compared to cars and trucks.

I am very happy to have the fireplace!

Fireplaces are notoriously inefficient and polluting. They were great until wood burning stoves were invented and then became common 200 years ago.

Were I you (or maybe if you were me ;) ), I (you) would install a wood or pellet insert. They are also substantially less polluting than an open fireplace and provide far more heat to the room.

I have considered a pellet stove insert. We did have a wood stove insert growing up that we used to heat the house.

New pellet stoves here have a catalytic converter too which would lower the particulates.

Some reports it will be impossible to purchase wood stoves and later people who
have one MAY not be allowed to burn wood. THIS WORLD WILL CHANGE.
