we just picked up 5 hens yesterday and I'm completely new to this. I couldn't find a forum post with tips on snacks and treats for the chickens. Also plants that they might like?
 
hello and welcome,check out the new member information,i give our chicken's a chicken block we bought at tractor supply,also fresh corn on the cob,i know it's fattening but they love it,our's also love the fresh cut grass too,good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
It's really best to get them eating proper chicken feed before ruining their appetite with treats. Chickens are just like kids, too many treats and they turn up their beaks at what is nutritionally necessary for their health and egg production.

Treats should not exceed more than 10% of their daily food intake. Just because they love corn,boss, bread, etc, doesn't mean they have great taste. Styrofoam is like popcorn to them but, I don't suggest adding it their treat list.
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on drumstick diva's advice. Keep the treats to less than 10% of their total diet. Commercial feeds are specially formulated to meat their dietary needs. Too many treats will make them fat and unhealthy. It's the equivalent of us eating potato chips and candy. Congrats on your new flock! Yes, definitely keep the treats down to a dull roar. Especially with layers. Eggs are made of nearly all the building blocks of life and to produce an egg daily takes huge amounts of vitamin packed food. So make sure they are eating enough of their feed.

If these birds are laying, make sure to have them on layer feed now and oyster shell on the side. If they were laying when you purchased them, they may stop laying for several weeks as they get used to their new home. Chickens don't like to be moved and it causes stress.

Treats should only take up 10% of their daily diet. You can feed them many plants. But these are ones to never feed them.
zalea, philodendron, rhododendron, sweet pea, black nightshade, foxglove, oleander, castor bean, vetch, henbane, irises, lantana, St. john's wort, trumpets vine, morning glory, datura, clematis and honeysuckle.

Other than that, you can pretty much feed them any plant.
