I have a coccidiosis outbreak and have lost two chickens already. I have been giving corid for 5 days now at 1.5 tsp per gallon since I got the fecal lab results back and it said it was a 4+ severe. The blood has stopped and so far no one is going into that zombie trance the other ones did. How do I know the medicine has done it's job and we are in the clear? Poop is watery some but it's also 95 outside and the heat is not helping matters! I have cleaned everything and cleaning the poop out of run and coop twice a day. I feel like I need to give them some electrolytes since it's so hot outside but I don't want to interfere with the corid.
Any advice is most appreciated!
 
You can stop the Corid and give electrolytes and vitamins plus some probiotics or buttermilk/yogurt. Or you can give Corid for a total of 7 days without a problem. Vitamins and probiotics are needed after Corid to replace lost beneficial bacteria and vitamins lost. Sorry about your loss.
 
Thank you! I have been giving them yogurt and I put a small amount of probiotic in their feed. I planned on keeping them on for 7 days just to be on the safe side. Do I need to wait 2 weeks and put them on corid again for 3 more days? Also, does this mean the survivors have built up an immunity or they just dodged a bullet by getting the medicine on time? Sorry for all the questions but they are 4 months old and I don't want to lost anymore.
 
You should be finished with Corid after this treatment. Some people will use a 1/3 dose every 3 weeks for young chicks, but since your are 4 months old, they should have started developing immunity to the strain in your soil, unless they have moved to new ground, or you have added a new flock member. You may get differing opinions about dosing them, and if you feel like doing a preventative dose in 3 weeks, it won't hurt them. Here are some of my favorite links about cocci:

I started my chickens on a pigeon corid treatment( limited in the UK ) it says for poultry too but only on the advert not the bottle
Dose is 29fl oz to 4.5 litres
But I now don't think they have it, can I just stop the treatment after one day and throw the water away?
 
29 ounces to 4.5 liters sounds like a lot. Is that what it said? If they never had symptoms, I would stop. If they did have symptoms, I would do 5 days or 7 days.
 
Thank you for the articles!. I have read those and everything else I can get my hands on. We haven't had any new flock members and they all grew up here. The only thing I can think of could be our landscaper has chickens and tracked it in or the conditions were just right when we got a lot of rain a few weeks ago and then it shot up to 100 degrees and it could have made everything go bonkers. We also live near woods and have tons of wildbirds that visit our feeders and pond I wonder if it could be from them. All I know is this is a nightmare especially when you lose the friendly ones you get attached to. :(
I hope we have seen the end of this and we don't have anymore problems.

It does sound like too much... the amount of amprolium per liter needed is 254mg, which is:
  • 20% powder is about 1/2 teaspoon
  • 9.6% liquid is 2.65ml.

Some people use give the .006% dose for one to two weeks after treatment.

Indications: For the treatment of coccidiosis.
Amount: Administer at the 0.012 percent level in drinking water as soon as coccidiosis is diagnosed and continue for 3 to 5 days (in severe outbreaks, give amprolium at the 0.024 percent level); continue with 0.006 percent amprolium-medicated water for an additional 1 to 2 weeks."

UPDATE- Everyone now seems to be doing better. We still have some diarrhea that looks like it could be secondary problem from the cocci. I am rotating days where I give them vitamin electrolyte water/ acv honey water/ plain water/ probiotic water. We have also had a break in the heat which has helped tremendously. If they have made it this long is there a chance that they could get sick from this strain again? Also, thanks for everyones advice it is most appreciated.
