ROOSTER"S SPUR FELL OFF

My rooster was being held by my younger sister when his left spur fell off. The spur was originally about 5 inches long. Under the old spur was an about 3 inch long, soft, new, bleeding spur. Is this supposed to happen? The rooster is now hanging in the yard acting completely normal. Will this happen to his other spur? Will the spur get infected because it is so soft? The old spur is hollow and blood free.
 
I'm not sure why the casing would suddenly fall off, but it isn't usually something too serious. Sometimes, people actually purposely remove the outer spur casing when they get too long to prevent injury to the hens or to people.

The new, exposed spur is going to be tender and sensitive for the next few days until it hardens, so it may be a good idea to isolate him for a couple of days to prevent injury to it. Applying some antibiotic ointment (without "caine" ingredients or painkillers, as these can be dangerous to chickens) may be a good idea as well.

Not really sure how it fell off, but people do take spurs off of their roosters, so I would just keep checking it over the next few days, and if it doesn't stop bleeding then there will be cause for concern. My guess is that the spur underneath will harden, but if it doesn't then I'm sorry I have no idea.
