Just saying my hello's!

I've got experience with raising/hand rearing house/pet birds ranging from finches, greys, and on up to macaws. (and lots in between). I also have husbandry experience with ostriches, emu's, and pelican's. ;)

I'm here to dig around some more on chickens and quail. I'm not able to keep chickens yet, but hopefully I'll keep quail as long as everything works out ok. Still researching it though. We are in a small apartment so I'm not sure how feasible it is. But in the future we'd like a homestead with both chickens and quail on it.

Welcome to Back yard chickens. Do you work at a zoo : ostriches, emus , pelicans??
with that and you caged bird experiences, I would think chickens would be a snap.

You probably could get by with a couple house pet banties, seramas for instance were bred to be housepets in Malaysia. They accept confinement well- don't need a lot of space, and go broody from time to time- so you can rear more without a incubator.

If you check out "Other Backyard Chickens," forum here, you will find threads concerning quail, quineas, ducks, geese, swans, emus, peafowl etc.

I have worked for zoo's in the past yes, but now I'm a full time mama to an ornery 2 yr old daughter, run a cake decorating business on the side as well as breed saltwater fish from home.

I did take a quick peek at the other animals and found quite a few threads with some interest to me! I think my husband would be most interested in the quail due to their silent nature (minus the males). But I most certainly would look into chickens if I thought there was one I could actually keep in an apartment with no problems! I'd rather a chicken to be honest! lol.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You've got quite an exotic mix of birds. Regarding chickens, I've known a few people over the years who have kept Silkies in their houses. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting quail, and hopefully, eventually, even chickens.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Start with Coturnix quail. They are very easy to handle and raise. A good beginner quail breed. Quail are strange little poultry, LOL, I keep Bobwhites. I would shy away from Bobwhites, Gambels, Californias, etc...all the New World species of quail. They are very aggressive and flighty. Coturnix quail are very docile and fun to keep.

You can keep them in pens or aviary style set ups. I use aviaries for my Bobs. Give them a more natural environment. I use fake christmas trees for brush cover and grass hay for floor litter and making nests.

Quail are fun to keep, but they need to be kept properly to avoid aggression. If you go with a pen style set up, don't crowd them in, always give them places to get off the wire and use some fake foliage as well in the pens to give them hidy places to escape each other.

Good luck with your adventures and welcome to our flock!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I have kept googling searches while researching and this site seems to just keep popping up... So I figured it was time to really look at what you've got here.... So far I like it!

Yes the coturnix is what I've narrowed it down to. Just trying to decide which ones now?!!!! Lol. I'd like them for eggs and a bit of meat. I don't have the space to grow them out in large numbers for meat... So I suspect it'll mostly just be for eggs. Which is why I'm beginning to lean towards the standards and street away from the Texas a & m. But any who!!! ;)
