I have a 2 year old rose comb brown leghorn with a swollen vent or a swollen poop-hole. she won't let me get a good look at it (hence - no picture to show you) I assume it's the egg vent, as she IS pooping - all over herself. her behind feathers are matted w/poop cuz this swollen vent is 1/2 blocking her poop-hole. it's swollen and red and from what I read, she might have an egg stuck up in there. I can't catch her, and even if I did, I don't know what I would do anyway, so.... any advice?

It could be a prolapsed vent in which some of the pink internal tissue comes outside the vent opening. It can happen on it's own or from being egg bound. Below is a picture of prolapse, and if it is that, you would need to keep the vent clean, and apply honey or Preparation H ointment to reduce swelling. Then push the tissue back inside as soon as possible so that it doesn't dry out and die. Prolapses can keep coming out for days, and they have to be pushed back in and held there for several minutes (rubber gloves and lubricant are your friends treating this.) Let us know if this isn't the problem.

THANX A LOT !!! yes, that is what it looks like. I have some prep.H & gloves at the house, so i'll have to try to snag her when she goes in to roost as she's a quick one & hard to catch. thanx a ton for the help !

You're very welcome. You may want to isolate her in a cage in a darkened room for 16 hours a day to eventually stop her from laying until the prolapse heals. Here are a few links to read about prolapsed cloaca or vent:

Chicken only has one outer opening....everything comes from that same opening poop and eggs....internally different plumbing systems end up here but there is not a poop hole AND a vent....they are both the same. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

thanks for all the info. I sure didn't know it all came out of the same hole. just assumed there were 2 exits. anyway.... caught her last night after they roosted for the evening and got the prep.H and the rubber gloves and popped it back in. messy adventure that neither of us cared for much. will check her when I get home tonight and repeat if needed. thanx again.

Here are a couple of diagrams that show the cloaca or vent opening where the large intestine and vagina come together in hens.

If you can't get I to stay in with the methods mentioned above, you could try putting her in a dimly lit room or crate and reduce her feed. The combination of the two two should cease her egg production and allow her to heal. Provide plenty of fresh, clean, cool water. :D

Our poor Noel, which is Golden Red in color chicken hen unknown breed who is 1-2 yrs old has a swollen abdomen. She eats, drinks, unknown amounts and poops which was this morning little wattery green and white cap.Her abdomen feels like sorry for the wording human female breast. I have massaged her lower abdomen between her legs and both sides towards her vent 15-30 minutes, and warm bathed her for 15 minutes.I do feel something left side that is hard on the underside behind left leg about a inch as I was moving toward her vent I couldn't feel it any more. Unsure if egg or end of breast bone or rib cage. Her back side is bluish reddish purple...about Two weeks ago she was lethargic, ate little to nothing seemed depressed for Two days any help would be greatly appreciated. Noel thanks you for your time. Thank you for your time.
