injured chicken that "yawns"

can anyone tell me the reason my rooster who was visciously attacked, is now making a yawning motion with his mouth. Almost looks like a silent crow, no sound. He is isolated in a clean roomy cage, his partner hen however suffered a fatality. He also makes a sound like he is moaning or crying, Im sure most of us know chicken language. He eating poorly. wound is mostly around cloaca. He doesnt seem to be having breathing difficulty.

Clyde Barrow - the majority of us are not mean or rude. We all make mistakes! Many people start their new member posts by asking help with a sick or injured bird. If it is beyond our field of expertise we tell people to post at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures" thread. I would guess your rooster has internal injuries that may only be apparent to a vet, or someone qualified to do a full body exam. That is something that can't be done via the internet.

Oh, I am so sorry about your rooster. Sometimes these internal injuries turn into infections and can kill them. Even the trauma itself can kill them by sending them into shock. For now, keep him in a warm, clean, dry place. If you have an infra red heat lamp, you might let him sit under it for 15 or 20 mins every hour or so, not only to keep him warm but to with circulation. Infra red is a very healing light.

Are you putting anything on this wound? You can use any antibacteria type medication like neosporin, but make sure it doesn't have the pain killer in it. If he is in pain, you can give him baby aspin...1/2 in the morning and the other half in the evening. Put it in a raisin...goes down easy.

And if you feel he has an internal infection, you can either use injectable penicillin or if you can't do injections, you might try some sulfadimethoxine in his water for 5 days.

Feed him what ever he will eat. Warmed up, chopped hard boiled eggs are emergency food for birds. They are readily eaten by sick birds and the birds can live on eggs exclusively while healing.

As for whom ever was mean to you, just let it roll off like water on a ducks back. And while this is New Members intro section, lots of newbies come here with issues. You are new to the forums and there is no way you were to know. So please post here if you are still having trouble with your rooster.

So sorry about your bird!

Defiantly isolate him in a warm, clean and dry area. Feed and water him often. Scrambled or hard boiled egg and oatmeal are great to feed during times like this.

Two Crows gave you excellent advice. The only thing I can add is that you may want to give him herbs. Lavender, rosemary, peppermint, ginger, echinacea, thyme and yarrow are all pain relievers, aromatic and calming and immune system boosters. Bay leaves, chamomile and mint will keep bother some insects away if your bird is outside. Parsley aids in blood vessel and bone development and is high in vitamins so that is another great herb to use. Herbs are very soothing and good at healing birds and are a must have in times of need.

the attack was my own jack russell-chihuahua mix breed. I was all too trusting after 7 months. I once had a wonderful English setter (a bird dog) who would literally trip over my chickens to get to a sparrow, because the chickens were her buddies and protected them. It amazed people to see a hunting dog friends w the chickens. However dogs have different personalities like people and i never should have let my guard down.i was away at night fall and didnt get them put away before it got dark so there's another vulaerable fact. They never made it to the coop. The hen was simply killed and left, Roo was hiding behind an inflatable pool inner tube against a wall on the patio until we found him. He was bitten above the tail feathers and all over his anal area. i began w blu kote and neosporin, but i don not like it because of the alcohol in it! If my skin was acraped up i wouldnt want alcohol on it. Now using hydrogen peroxide and pat dry it then neosporin> aspirin water for 1st 24 hours. and lots of tlc.

wonderful advice, i actually have mint and lavender in my garden! anything that calms. he was so freaked out. after 3 days he is just now starting to get around. and eating fresh fruit and pedialyte diluted.
