A flock with bumblefoot: Journey back to health

Regarding the blisters between the toes from the rubbing. What about trying some liquid bandage, new skin, or something similar? If the foot itself is healed & the vet wrap is rubbing blisters & causing new wounds - that might be a viable option. You would want to make sure the blisters are clean before "trapping" any bacteria in the healing area though - so a good soak in soapy water, then an Epsom salt soak rinse perhaps?

Just did one foot on my sweet little girl lehorn, now, time for the other. So glad someone posted that of Chicken Chick..thought I was going to see the other one that's been out for a while, but it was the one showing the punch. I just ordered one after watching that! Looks great, and a lot easier!
Now, for that spoon curette...where to get one of those? Amazon also? And what size? Has anyone used one before. I don't like using the exacto..or however you spell it..lol... thanks!

Why do they always go in two's? If not two feet at a time, two chickens at a time. My Two RIR's did this last year. They cleared up so nicely.

I put white tape over the bandage, for an extra stick to it job. They lay while they are wrapped up. :)

Amazon or Ebay should have currettes - the size you want depends on the size punch you use. You need to be able to get it in the hole you have created. There are a couple of different types - the one on the video was a spoon currette. There are wire types but I would try to find a spoon type. Here is a 3 piece set that is reasonable: http://www.amazon.com/Meyhoefer-Cha...8&qid=1413129165&sr=8-36&keywords=curette+set

Looks like they are comparing bandages. You are really doing a great job.

Day 36 Treatment (Sunday)

Everything was relatively steady-state yesterday. I was going quickly so only got a few pictures.

Both Goldies were continuing to look about the same- good, but not quite healed all the way yet. Both have one foot bandaged, one unbandaged. I continue to monitor the unbandaged feet and all still seems good. Here is Goldie #2, the still-bandaged foot:

Robin was the same. One foot bandaged, one not. When I checked the unbandaged foot, I noticed that it actually had a blister scab between the toes that I had somehow missed. It was hard and dark, but it was actually quite dry, and it flaked off when I poked at it, leaving clear, healed skin underneath. This makes me think perhaps I could try leaving some of the other blisters exposed for the ones who have healed foot pads. I will also be looking into the liquid bandage @rnchick74 recommended- I've never used it before and need to figure out how it holds up to wet, cold, etc.

The blisters are funny- they almost seem like "blood blisters" that I remember getting as a kid. They look dark and dirty, but it seems like it's not really that dirty inside, but just a ton of blood. I've been soaking the blistered feet in warm epsom salt baths, which loosens the scabs, but if I try to remove them, they just start gushing blood. Here is a good picture of what it looks like on Ro, who has the worst of the blisters- you can see the two dark blisters between the toes, as well as the scab that's still healing up on the foot pad. She is the worst of them at this point, so I'm doing what I can for her and really trying to keep the gauze thickly padded between the toes and just change things frequently.

Nothing much is different with Pretty Girl either. She was soaked, cleaned, and rebandaged on both feet.

Finally, a really cute picture of Robin cuddling up with Black and White sharing a nice sunny spot:

I just don't understand how the bandages are making blisters. I have had bandages on the feet of my chickens for over a month and they have not any gotten blisters. You are using gauze and vet wrap?

Hello Again! Well, it's been a long, hard road for you, that's for sure. But again, I applaud your efforts for being a diligent and loving chicken mama.

With that said, I looked back on your thread to the beginning and you have addressed your roost bar problems which is good. But I think (correct me if I'm wrong) you have not addressed what the real culprit may be for this massive outbreak...and that is your neighbor's wood pile and all the bramble-berry vines out back.

What measures have you taken to keep your girls out of there?

Yes, I don't understand the blisters either. I try to be really careful about the wrapping, using thin strips of vet wrap over gauze that lays flat and doesn't twist or bunch. I don't let it hang loose so it moves around but also try not to ame it super tight. So I just really don't know why it's happened, but it is obviously something about my technique because 3 out of 5 have the blisters
