My first chicks! Mixed breeds with weekly pic updates!!

So I learned a valuable lesson today. Don't leave string or rope where chickens can access it easily. There was a small section of rope left on the dog crate from when I had the brooder lamp hanging and I guess they played with it until it unraveled a bunch. When I went to let them out after the hens finished laying, they all ran/flew out in a crazy rush as usual...all but one. Poor Olive caught her toe on the string and tripped flat when she tried to run with the others. I quickly ran in for scissors to cut her loose and luckily she didn't hurt herself while she was panicking. Just a little scrape on her face. Scared the crap out of me though. It was wrapped pretty tight around one of her toes, I feel really lucky that I got there quick enough and that she didn't break her leg trying to free herself. I will definitely be more careful in the future!

Exciting news! I decided to let the adults out with the little ones again to see how they would get along yesterday evening a few hours before chicken bed time. I have tried this twice before, once last week and once a few weeks ago. This time the attitudes of the hens was more acceptable and less violent. There was no pulling out of mouthfuls of feathers. They chase them sometimes if they get too close and definitely chase them if they tell a chick to move and it doesn't listen.. The hens only seem to peck as hard, or even less so than the chicks do to each other. They aren't best buds yet but so far so good I thought, so I left them mixed together for the night. It seems to have gone well enough and I left them together today again. It went about as well as yesterday, they seem to stick to separate groups for now. So I'm going to say they are officially merged!!!!!

No more herding little chickens around or the hassle of having them separate! Due to the fact that they are one flock now, whether they think so or not haha, I will be posting all updates and pictures in my flock thread from now on. It can be found here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/929222/life-in-the-land-of-summer . Its been fun, thanks to anyone who has been following along, hope you enjoyed it!! I'll hopefully be back with more chick pics next year with my first broody thread!
