FFA Auction will be on October 19th at Topsfield Fairgrounds this year

FYI just so nobody gets the wrong idea - the consigner with the unmarked silkies and the damaged bird was NOT TeddyBearSilkie from Dracut, MA, who posted above in this thread - it was another local seller who will not be named.
I'm sorry this happened, and hope that it doesn't discourage anyone for participating in next years sale.
Tony, the auctioneer, donates both his time and much merchandise to the sale, and it will be a lesser event if/when he is unable to participate.

I appreciate you clearing that up luvmychixandducks. Just so you know I didn't think you were accusing me. Two of the people who brought silkies are on this thread and I'm sure it was neither of us, but I have a good guess as to who you are referring too. I am reserving judgment though since I am not directly involved nor did I witness anything that you described. I thought Tony did a fine job with the auction and I would definitely go again. Silkies are always a hit or miss with getting the gender right and you're right it is buyer beware, but I stand by my original sentiment and there were some obvious males with streamers coming off the back of the head that should not have been sold as girls. I offered twice to mark my boxes regarding gender, but was assured I didn't have to. It is what it is. I had only hoped that my birds would go to a home that wanted them and that's the only reason my feathers were rumpled. I am certainly not discouraged from attending next year and neither should anyone else. I thought that overall the auction was well run and it was for a good cause. I'm already thinking about next year and perhaps I will be donating a few items.

The tax form was new - as a result of the merger between the Agricultural school and the Technical high school - all payments must go through the new combined accounting office, as explained in a letter prior consigners received prior to the auction.
Consigners had the option of filing the form, (W9) donating their items completely, or not selling at all.
Since I did not want to have my name, address and SSN on file outside of the IRS if possible, because of the possibility of identity theft, I chose to donate my items 100% to the kids and lose the profit.
Thanks for the info. I didn't even go this year, so I had no idea there were changes to the process.

It is unfortunate to have even one sleazy seller like that. It's a fundraiser for the FFA kids for cryin out loud.

It wasn't me either. I brought one rooster who was marked rooster and only sold for $2 (wish I didn't bring him because he was REALLY gorgeous and I could have shown him) but it was for a great cause and I hope he got a great home and four sets of chicks that really were too young to tell the sex, about 1-2 months old and they were definitely not sold as hens.

If you have nice ones like that next year you may want to consider bringing them to the Boston Poultry Expo instead. That is being held this upcoming weekend in Oxford. You may find someone looking for a breeder bird.

I donated 100% to the FFA as I stated earlier - however I never did receive a statement from the school re the value of my donation, for tax purposes.
From the above post, looks like I'm not the only one.
