One of my isa brown girls lays a jumbo egg about once a week. They are about the size of a duck egg and the carton wont close with them in it

These are great to collect but im afraid they are hard on my hen who only recently started laying. All of them lay exceptionally large eggs anyway so these are whoppers. Can anyone tell me why this happens and if it is bad for the hen?
 
I'm guessing that since your hen just started it is just a little glitch in her system. After a while she should be laying regular eggs.

It can be. I worry when a hen regularly lays whoppers, especially if they become thin shelled as they get older. Lost one hen whose huge egg formed around yet another egg and it was so large, it dropped into the abdomen and I lost her. Her eggs had always been giant. So, I'd rather they lay normal large or extra large, but the whoppers do worry me after some of my Delaware line I know of have died related to extreme egg size.

Now, yours may back off as she continues since these are her first eggs, so don't worry right now.

I feed them layers mash, oyster shells, egg shells, one handful of oats and corn per day, whatever worms or juicy insects that I dig up in their pen and obviously grass. They are extremely happy ladies :)

Exceptionally large eggs can occur when the protein level is consistently too high.

This doesn't seem to be your issue.

As others stated, I would be concerned if this were a regular event, not if a rarity.

The hen had been laying now since late august and the eggs are this size everyother day.
 
we have an orpington "Becky" that does this. her shells do not seem to be any thinner, but our hens get enough calcium and the shells are very thick. are your eggs double yolks? our extra large orpington eggs all have double yolks and i have been told this happens from time to time. she also skips the next day and does not lay an egg.
 
Yes she is still laying them. They are all double yolks but she does not take a break the next day. Today I got 7 eggs and only have 6 hens ???
