A friend of mine who does not keep chickens asked us to take in a free-roaming neighborhood chciken who had adopted their family. They asked around first and no one claimed it. This chicken is very tame and sweet but has been out on its own for a while now. I know it was not ideal to bring it here as a solo bird, but my friend was worried for it (saw cats around it) and we recently lost a bird and didn't mind taking her in.

Well....she is the sweetest thing, but big, healthy, and smart. (She's a RIR) She flew over my very thorny, tangly, brambly, well-treed 4-ft back fence (none of the 6 birds I've had over time have ever attempted this ) AND flew up to perch on my 6-ft side fence this morning. This was with one wing mildly clipped (did it as soon as we got her). I actually got her back from wandering the woods behind my house by CALLING HER to me (she is so good!!) and brought her in and clipped all primaries very short, but I'm worried she will do it again.

She is in the coop now, but we have a small Catawba coop and she clearly hates it in there. I guess I should keep her in for...how long? Will she get to know her place if I keep her confined?? When she was out, I did see her scuffle with my other three a bit, but it was minor. Two of my other three are old, one is young and very skittish and small, and all are molting, so they are not aggressive right now. I don't think she's scared of them as much as she is used to being FREEEE!

BTW, my yard is pretty small--1/3 of an acre? In town. It's a nice chicken yard, though--lots of bugs and grass and veg. 100% fenced, 4 ft in the back (but really more than 4 ft when you consider all the vegetation on it), 6 ft wood all other sides.
