Fencing ideas

Now I understand. Makes perfect sense.

Another thought. I don't know how much space you have outside this area, but if you make your outside fencing 2 feet longer at each corner you can make your moat 5 feet wide instead of 3 feet.

Your current inside fence is 48 x 30 so your outside fence is 54 x 36. Change that outside fence to 58 x 40, not much of a change if you have room, and you have a nice 5 feet wide moat that you can get around in easily, maybe even mow in there if you need to. This is not about how much room the chickens need, it’s about making it easy for you. I think you will be glad you did.

Thanks, I'll think about it. It will actually cut down on my garden space. The total area we have for this is about 55x40, so I plotted my chicken moat area and then the left over area became my garden. I have other areas for more garden, I just wanted as much of it as possible inside the moat.

IMO it's good to plan early and alot and change things to try different layouts....but I'm a design drafter by trade so it comes natural :D

Are you drawing things out to scale? I use a cad program but graph paper can work well.

Am fascinated by the moat system, ingenious if intensive to build...look forward to seeing where you go with it!

I actually prefer graph paper, never got used to drawing things up on a computer. But yes, my mother is very architectural and I think I inherited some of that. I have to have exact measurements and draw them all out! Drives my husband nuts lol.

As to the amount of work, we will need to build a fence around the chickens and one around the garden no matter what; we have deer that we need to keep out of the garden. Fencing it in twice will help even more actually.

I can't wait to see the finished product myself!! :)

Cool Beans!! People laugh until our projects go up with little or no 'field design' ending in wasted materials/time.

Then you could add a third fence perimeter outside the chicken moat for the dogs to roam...would keep all the other predators out....lol!!!
