I am new to this in every way. My husband and i are looking into raising chickens now that we have the space. However we were both raised more in small city or suburbs rather than country. Any advice you could give to total newbies would be great! We are thinking to have them just for the eggs however we do spend a lot on chicken but we aren't sure if we could do that. Love all the information here.

Glad you joined us. There's a lot of info on the site. The first place to start is the Learning Center Articles. If you haven't already done so there are several books that can help get you started. Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens is a good start.

First decide what you want, how much space and time you have and how you want to manage them. What you expect of them. Depends on your climate, but I found it easier to learn all I could and get started with newborns in March so they could move out into coop in warm weather. Planning your coop and getting it built takes longer than we think, so plan ahead and start before you get your flock.

There's so much info on the forums it can be overwhelming, but personally I prefer a blend of textbook info supplemented with those of experience ….and there's a lot of experienced flock owners here (not me I'm still new..proud owner of 6 - 19 month old hens I raised from 3 days old).

But, get ready for a really fun experience!
