khaki campbells and magpie, danger of flying away???

Hi all,

I've two khaki Campbell's and a magpie ducks, all three are starting to try to fly,

Does anyone with experience of these ducks flying away or am I safe enough???

I also have two Aylesbury ducklings, I suppose I better ask the same question about these little ones for when the time comes,


Should I clip their wings???
 
hi Massey I have two six month old drakes, they used to fly over the fence until I put them in with the girls. they free range during the day and penned up at night, that has a top to it. All of my ducks fly and run at the same time they look so funny. good luck with yours.
 
Its funny you say run and fly at the same time, mine are flapping their wings and running trying to take off but haven't got off the ground yet,
 
Neither of them can sustain flight, but both can usually fly some, especially if they get a running start and take off from a hill. Our Khaki can get around three feet into the air from flat ground, mostly if something spooks her, and she can do a soaring/flying thing for about twenty feet if she gets a good run off our hill.
 
My Magpies are still juveniles, so we have seen them get some decent height for domestic ducks. The parent ducks did not really fly, so we expect these won't either once fully grown.

I've seen it referred to on here as "wing assisted jumping", which perfectly describes what we see most of the time... Jumping off something or running downhill flapping, and getting a foot or two off the ground for a few minutes. Typically that's all the flying you should see from domestic duck breeds, or at least that's my understanding.
