How long could you sustain yourself and family?

Maple beer?? Hey I have maples on my property!! And I make beer!!! Wow. This is the best beer idea I've read so far :D Thanks for the idea. If you ever want to share the details of how you did it, I would read.

Up to now, I've made beer with the hot peppers from my garden (Espelette) and also with herbs, but never maple.
I used concentrated maple sap instead of barley malt. Stopped the boil well short of syrup. Don't know what the sugar content was, judged by taste. The maple sugar apparently made excellent yeast food as it made very strong beer very quickly with a pleasant maple flavor. I also smoke infused the sap so it was a bit smokey as well. Used very little hops. Made a very crisp and refreshing drink. Not a ton of flavor. I think I'll experiment with some wild rice malt next season. Still in experimental stage, the only info I could find was on adding maple syrup as a flavoring. I didn't want sweet, just the flavor and the free malt. It made a drinkable and "effective" beverage, but still some kinks to work out. Next time I will use wine yeast and a small amount of some sort of roasted grain malt to add more beer flavor.

Oh, thanks for the info. I just bottled a batch this weekend.. next one will try to be a scotch ale and my NEXT one might contain my own hops :) Do you grow the grains and hops that you used for your beer? I will have hops next week (hopefully, if the plant doesn't die), but I find that the grain is not productive enough. I don't plan to make my own grains :(
