You can keep 1 male with up to 7 females and still get good fertility.
Glad you got them all separated and happy again! Males can cause all kinds of issues with the hens so it is always best to keep as many females with one male as you can. Just make sure they have plenty of room. Too many girls together in tight spaces and fighting can ensue.
