Hello!!

I was wondering what people are putting in their run? Currently, I have just the dirt that was under the run at the beginning. I'm still new to all of this...my 8 babies are only 3 mos old. (It's getting hard to tell them apart as they're growing to all look the same! * I thought of using those colored circles for their feet)

Anyway, I have seen posts that people use sand, some use hay, some hate hay, some use grass clippings, etc. I'd love to know what exactly to use, or if it's fine to keep it the way it is.

Treats - what do you give, and do you give them every day?

Thank you!!

I put down a layer of gravel for drainage then a layer of sand. Works great for me. No muddy chicken feet. You can leave it dirt floor if you want but it could get messy in wet weather. I give treats every day. My girls are spoiled. Fresh fruit and veggies, cracked corn, warm oatmeal, cooked beans. Whatever I have on hand on any given day. Just make sure to research what you shouldn't feed chickens. My girls love it when I put a pumpkin in the run for them to peck at. I try not to give them so many treats that they don't eat their feed. Cracked corn is kept to a minimum. I prefer fresh treats.

Thank you, Mtngirl35!! This is very helpful!! I have looked up what not to give, but will check again to be sure. Silly question: do you make the oatmeal with water before giving it to them or just empty the packet for them? LOVE the pumpkin idea!! ...and what kind of beans?

Thanx so much!!

Treats. I give a couple hands full of scratch with a combination of black oil sunflower seed, bird seed, & factory prepared scratch first thing in the morning, along with whatever left over kitchen scraps there are including meat scraps, fresh or cooked. They'll eat what the like, & leave the rest. I rake up the leftovers every couple of days and put it in the compost. I think I read not to give dried beans. The pen has good drainage so I don't use anything in it. They get to free-range a lot. I may be subject to mistakes tho.

Thank you so much for the help, mtngirl35 and iawoodchip!! I never would have thought to give them oatmeal!!
