Today while I was watching the flock, my brown leghorn hen that is molting, mounted another hen and acted just like our rooster!

Is she just getting old and losing her henny hormones? She is probably 2 years old. She used to lay 6 eggs a week, but hasn't since she started molting.

It could be the molt. Molting and no egg laying could be making her have an attitude. It could be a hormonal imbalance. It could be an infection in her reproductive system causing a hormonal imbalance. If you have no roos she may be acting like the man of the coop and showing dominance. If she didn't act this way before the molt, I would say that's probably your problem. My usually gentle roos were in foul moods-no pun intended-when they went thru a molt. They live in a roo coop and get along great except when molting. You might have to isolate her for awhile if she gives the other girls too much grief.

Mounting is about dominance not just about mating......just a dominance move probably.
Crowing could be a sign of 'gender change'...it can happen, usually not with a rooster present that I've read about.
