I finally got an egg!

Well, actually I think I finally found a nest. I free range all my birds. I have been thinking I should have eggs for a month now. I hear the egg song now and then. I run to look but never find a nest.

Today while I was cleaning chickens (overly horny Roosters with no manners) I heard the egg song in a small lean to I have. I ran to look for eggs and saw a hen walking out of the lean too. I searched and found a next with 6 eggs in it. 2 were pinkish. 2 were very dark brown, one was speckled and one was light brown.

I was so excited that I made my wife come and see them as soon as she got home from work! I had them in a cartoon on the endgate of my pickup. She was talking to me as I cleaned chickens. looked down and a chicken had laid a light brown egg at her feet.

She has all the luck!

But then she did get me too,,,,,

Congratulations on those first eggs! :ya Sounds like you found quite the collection, sneaky pullets!
 
What are you going to do? If there may be a month's worth of eggs out there somewhere, how will you know which are fresh when you find them if they're all over the place? That would make me crazy.

Can you keep the chickens in a contained area for awhile and encourage use of your nest boxes?

I am guessing my dogs, which also free range have been eating well..

I will be moving them into a pen and a different coop and keeping them contained in a couple weeks as winter approaches. Hopefully they will discover and learn to use the nest boxes by then. I need to remove about 10 more roosters before I move everyone. I also need to send some hens to freezer camp, but I am pretending I will never have to make those choices for now.

I plan to eat these eggs as they can only be a few days old and it has not gotten above 60 and the nights have been around 35. I figure it is 4 chickens laying the eggs by the colors of the eggs. I put some phony eggs in the nest to keep them there for now.
 
As I look at them today, I think pink was the wrong color. Today the two seem to have a green tint, sorta like a duck egg. the rest are definitely brown.


I know I an rattling 0n about these stupid eggs. BUT it is an exciting time here for us!

The picture color is slightly off. But the specks show up pretty good on the one. I wish I knew which chicken lays which egg. It would make culling easier.

 
Most of us 'rattle on' about our first egg(s) so rattle away! It's fun to share someone elses excitement and reminds us of how we felt finding our first egg :)

Every one here talks about how yellow and bright the yolks are in the fresh eggs. My wife just cracked them into a bowl to make an omelet. She does not read this site, she exclaimed "come here, look how bright these yolks are!"


The brightest yellow eggs I recall ever seeing, but then I have not had farm fresh eggs in 45 years.
