New rooster too timid?

Hello! So I currently have 4 hens Americauna, gold lace, silver lace) and wanted to get a rooster to look after them. I found a BB red bantam and thought he would hold his own even though he was small. Well, I'm attempting to integrate them now but the dominant hen just chases him off every time he gets near the flock. He puts up no fight and just runs anytime any of the hens even look at him. One of the hens (the last one I integrated who is kind of a loner, the other three were raised together) even seems like she wants to buddy up with him but he just runs when she gets close.
I've only been doing supervised visits for now, they don't seem too aggressive though. Should I just let them be and let them work it out or did I just get a lame rooster?

You know, I just bought a lavendar Orpington this summer, because I like having a rooster to look after the flock. (Plus I was supposed to get one buff brahma cockerel in my order from the hatchery, but they gave me all females.) Anyhow, I handled things they way you are. I kept the new (he was a bit younger than the flock) rooster in the storage room of my hen house, where they could see eachother, but they were still separated. That was for a few weeks. Then, I started letting them free range together. At night, my rooster (Robin is his name), he would go back to the storage room. He was skittish around the girls. Then after about a week or so of them ranging together, I finally made Robin go into the hen house with the girls. He blended in quite well by

Now Robin is bigger than all the girls. And he's turned into quite a gentleman. He calls them when he finds food and lets them eat first, and he really watches over them like a shepherd when they free range. And I love his crowing.

Awesome, thank you! Right now he is staying in our garage, which is empty aside from our lawn mower. I was hoping to get him out free ranging today but as soon as I propped the door open, he came out and the hens went in. He followed them back in and now they have been hanging out in there for the last hour or so, him on one end and the girls on the other, like a high school dance...I guess we'll see how it goes...
