I've been surfing the forums for about a year now but not until recently did I really get addicted. My first ever batch of chicks as composed of two unknown chickens from the hardware store down the road; one was mine and one was my younger brothers. They were as cute as can be and soon after we put them outside a skunk though they were more delicious than cute. It took me a long time to recover from.
Finally a few months ago I acquired 2 Polish chickens from my co-worker at a farm I work at. Everything was going very well until suddenly Egrett (my hen) started to look hunched and she became very lethargic. I started to research what it might be and I came up with impacted crop. The next day we made a vet appointment for for the following day at 11am. She only got worse and by the day of her appointment she was barely breathing. I woke up to go check on her and immediately rushed her to the vet. After she was examined the vet told me that she had no muscle mass! I was flabbergasted and horrified, she had shown no signs of sickness until three days prior. She passed away at the end of the day. I had her sent to Davis to be examined to help cases in the future.
This situation left Geoffery (my roo) alone and very confused. I had no choice but t set my feeling aside and decide what was best for him: give him to a local farm to be with others of his own king r try to keep him and get new chicks so he would have to ndure being uprooted after a traumatic loss. At first I voted for the farm but seeing him looking for Egrett every morning made me want to keep him and try to make him happy in the home he was raised in. So I went to work researching local hatcheries and such and finally settle on a backyard chicken farm.
So my first ever official flock now consist of:
Geoffery- My gold laced polish Rooster

Ji-my 7 week old Dominique

Bertha-my 7 week old Australorp

And last but not least Sky-my brothers 5 week old Black copper maran

I hope to continue my Kaishi flock for a long, long time!
Thanks!!!
