I went to the feed store to buy guniea pig food, and came home with chicks. Dang it. I shouldn't have looked in the chick tubs. They had SILKIES! OMG! I couldn't pass Silkie chicks up. I've been wanting them for ages. My husband is going to kill me, well, no. he'll just shake his head at me and chuckle. I am offically the crazy chicken lady, lol.
I am a little concerned. Every chick in the tub had varying levels of pasty butt, so I picked the three with the least amount. I cleaned them up and they're snoozing right now. I overheard a manager tell one of he staff that they need to put some antibiotics in the chick's water. Should I have picked up antibiotic, too. I hate to put my my chickens on antibiotics if I don't have too.
 
I had it once with one chick, you just have to check them as often as you can depending on work and stuff. I cleaned his bum with cotton and warm water whenever he needed it clipped the fluff carefully around his bum so that i wudnt have to clean it as often because he hated it and put a little olive oil on there to keep it all from drying up, i also fed him some natural youghurt. It went away in three days good luck

Thanks for the replies. I cleaned their butts and put some yougart next to their feed. They don't seem interested yet. I also picked up some ACV to add to their water and added DM to their feed.
 
What! Your feed store has chicks this time of year? That is awesome! What colors did you get?
 
The antibiotics won't do anything for the pasty butt, you'll just have to keep them cleaned up until it passes (and its VERY common for chicks in a high stress situation, like being shipped and then being in the feed store with people picking through them, to have it). The ACV might help it, and the yogurt certainly should once they start eating it.

When I get chicks with pasty butt I put 1/2 teaspoon of raw ACV per quart of water, clears up fast. Just do make sure you are using the raw acv with "the mother" in it, not the kind sold in the salad dressing isle.

And I agree, no antibiotic's. If anything that can make pasty butt problems worse, you want to encourage good gut bacteria, not kill it all off. Many feed store people who just don't know any better, or who think they need to "prevent" things, will throw antibiotic's at anything and everything trying to cover their bases.
 
I had checked the Atwood's add here in Arkansas about 3 weeks ago, and saw they had chicks in at their location in C AR and it was hard not to go over there and grab some....of course I had (and still have an order I am waiting on thru Meyer)....next week they show up!

I'm in Arkansas too! I don't know where Atwoods is though.
 
The Atwoods that had them was over in Lonoke right off 40 I think at HWY 38. They are the only ones here in AR that have/had them this time of year....I called and she said they had a ton of them at the time.
