We have a bantam white chicken with feathers on her feet. I originally thought it was a bantam Cochin but I just don't know anymore. Anyway, she doesn't really hang out with the flock. She's always in the back yard when they're in the front and now she has went to not roosting with them at night. Our chickens free range during the day and at night we lock them up in the coop for their protection. She has not shown up the last three nights. In fact, we don't see her most of the time during the day. Every once in a while we spot her in the yard, and she is still going into the coop to lay her eggs but other than that she seems to disappear.

I am really curious as to what is going on. Anyone with input and advice? I would sure appreciate it. I told my husband when we spot her again we need to clip her wings but then I wondered if she's disappearing because one of the other hens is being mean to her. I've never seen a hen be mean to her, but I'm wondering why she is being a loner.....

Are you sure she doesn't actually have a hidden nest somewhere and is brooding on it? Cochins or Cochin crosses tend to be a pretty broody birds and that disappearing act for most of the day and at night sure sounds like it.

Honestly I have no idea. I'll start looking for a nest and following her when I spot her again.
