Hey everyone,

We got our first egg from our chickens last night. It was a white one (I was sure the red sex links would lay first). Ecstatic that it has happened. I'm pretty sure it was the girl I was asking about a few weeks back asking if it was a rooster as around her but there is a mess of a line. Got a second egg today and it is even dirtier. It has been really wet recently so she might not have been able to clean herself normally in her dust bath. Is it normal for it to be dirtier after laying eggs? I will be moving the sand into the coop next week or covering the run with a drop sheet for winter.

Congratulations on your 1st egg!

If your run is messy, then the birds will track the mess into the nesting boxes with them which can make for some dirty eggs. And if you have a bird sleep in a box, that's going to be a real dirty egg (you don't have to ask me how I know this).

A cover over your outside area should help keep things cleaner.

Congratulations on those first eggs! :ya How Eggciting for you, may they lay many more! Like NorthFlChick said, if it is muddy/dirty outside, hens will track in mud on their feet and get eggs dirty (it really shows up on white eggs, you may not even really notice it on brown eggs. Also check the fluffy feathers on their butts, some hens have a lot of fluff and may need trimmed occasionally if poop sticks to the feathers.
