I have some Silkies I'm raising from chicks and wondering at what age should I be putting them out into there own coop and run.

I am expecting my day old chicks Monday or Tuesday they will be in a heated area and have the red light,by the time they are fully feathered winter will be in full swing,i am getting BO ,with them being in a heated area will it be to much for them to go into the coop,i have 6 other chickens 3 BO roos and 3 RSL hens they will be joining.they are 6 months old right now,i am going to partition off part of the coop and run for the new chicks, look but no touch ...lol....winters here in Arkansas are not so bad cold today warm tomorrow..i just want to get them the best start I can I just know that they will need to go and live
outside before spring

If you can, let them adjust gradually. Lower the heat slowly so that they adapt to the cooler temperatures before you put them out. I keep raising my brooder light a little more every day as I am getting them ready to go outside.

mrchicks how old are your chicks and what kind do you have,i thought about opening a window on nice days so they can get fresh air,i just do not want to take them out before their time and get cold, and by the time they will be 8 weeks it will be the end of December,i am not regretting waiting til spring,oh I am sure things would of been easier on me and them but I wanted to have pullets that will be laying eggs by spring and that can "pal" up with the roos

Oh my, I'll confess to how many birds I have as long as hubby isn't standing behind me to see it.

I have 20 Jersey Giants that are just a few months old. 8 Polish "teenagers" getting close to laying age. 5 Polish mutts, also close to laying. 2 older Polish hens, 3 Cuckoo Marans and 2 eggers. So I have 40 birds right now.

I've had birds in the coop anywhere from 1 week to 5 weeks all together but the coop is set up like a brooder so if they need the heat like my 2 week old brahma it is there for them but if they are almost fully feathered like my 5 week old turkens they can go to the outer edges of the light and cool off.

wow... you know when I bought the 6 I have now I was fine with that number, however when 3 became roos I need to add more hens,i am quite fond of all my chickens and am not willing to rehome or kill any of them so my only option was to get more hens...sounds crazy I do not know why I am so nervous about these 15 babies coming,i bought the 6 without even knowing anything about chickens or raising them and they are so spoiled and healthy, every morning they get cooked oatmeal, raw baby spinach fruit that is in season or an extra veggie, sometimes I will sprinkle meal worms over it or cooked hamburger, they love watermelon and tomatoes straight out of the garden,i even seen one of the hens the other day catch a mouse and ATE IT...all I could think was and I am eating your eggs....lol what kind of goodies do you feed your chickens I am always looking to add extras to their food, more so beings the bugs are hiding from old man winter

Yuck on the mouse! Your birds are much more spoiled than mine. I give them meal worms, grains, left over veggies, scrambled eggs when we have surplus, and they get time outside foraging if I am right there with them.
