My chickens are almost 6 months old now. I have 5, and 4 are laying (4 are black sex links, the 5th is an SLW). I've been lurking and reading for quite awhile. And I've been following the Facebook page.

Former city chick here. Only got to see chickens in college (animal science major). Moved out to the country and now I can technically have 1,000 chickens according to the ordinances, but I've started off with 5. Chicken math would be more likely to take over if I was a bit more into building. I built my own chicken coop, but now I'm done for awhile. Still, it's a 4x8 so I might add a few.

I live in Northern NY so hopefully these chickens are as winter hardy as everyone keeps telling me they are!

We're glad to have you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Those breeds are quite winter hardy, so I think that they'll be fine. My Wyandottes, in particular, have been extremely winter hardy down to below zero temperatures.

Good luck with your flock!

Glad you joined us!

Your chickens should do fine in cold weather, especially the Wyandotte. If your Black Sex-links have large combs, they may be susceptible to a little frostbite, but that possibility can be minimized by making sure the coop has plenty of ventilation, that they are out of the wind, and by putting Vaseline or oil on their combs before really cold nights.

Good luck with them!

Glad you joined us! 1000 chickens... hmm, lot of chicken match potential there!

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone!

Only 2 out of 4 of my BSLs have large floppy combs. I'll make sure to put Vaseline on them when it gets colder in the evenings. Last winter when I moved here, it was -25 degrees at the coldest.

I'll definitely be doing some chicken math and adding more chickens as time goes on. Probably not up to the 1,000 chicken limit or my neighbors might have a heart attack though.
