My Coop
My Coop
BYC was a great help to us when we built both of our coops. The "COOPS" section was invaluable and there was one day when my husband was puzzled about how to finish a portion of the coop. He came in, told me to pull up pictures of "nesting boxes" on BYC, and he studied them before he completed ours. We relied on BYC a lot during that time.

When you go to the "COOPS" tab, you'll find info on Small Coops, Medium Coops, Large Coops, Chicken Tractors, Incubators, Chicken Brooders, Waterers and Feeders. Sadly, there is no area devoted to Pens & Runs. We could really use one! We just completed our run and we had questions and would have loved ideas. It's impossible to search for either pens or runs on BYC as you'll get so many results using those words. As there is no designated place to put up info on your pen or run, there is really no way find a group of them in one area to look at. Most of the pages on coops are devoted to the coop alone with little to no information on the run. How to build, what materials to use, design, how to attach wiring, construction of pen doors, how to construct on different types of building sites, how to recycle materials into a run, construction techniques to improve drainage, best way to construct breeding pens, what is a paddock and how to build and use, how to cover the run, what type materials to use as a cover, making the apron, creative ideas for shading, landscaping outside the run, . . . all things that we really need to know and be able to find in one spot!

I so wish you'd put up a section for Pens & Runs like you have for the coops, incubators, brooders, waterers and feeders. I hope you'll accept and consider this recommendation. Should you decide to add a specific spot for Pens & Runs, let me know. I've been taking pictures as my husband has been constructing ours. ;-)

I think that's a brilliant idea! We did the same thing - checking designs, ideas, the DIY pages, everything. When we built our run we were winging it from a few we saw that were attached to the coops shown. Good idea, Mtn. Laurel! I hope BYC will seriously consider that!

Hey, thanks for the support!!

Here's an example of what a section on Pens & Runs could include . . .

"Our fencing wire is 48 inches wide but the pen is much taller to accommodate both the coop (I wanted the top of the run to be above the coop windows) and the slope of our land. My son, in the picture, is 6'4". The wire was attached to the bottom of the run poles first. The wire was then attached at the top of the run. This created an overlap in the middle. In the picture, my son is using tin snips to cut the overhanging wire. He allowed an excess of about two inches and then - using pliers - pulled the excess piece of wire up and around top of the bottom section of wire. This created an over-lock of wire, securing the top wire to the bottom, and eliminates the need for a horizontal beam between poles. While rather tedious and labor intensive, it allows for an unbroken view into the pen. No wire will be wasted as the excess will be used in the construction of an apron around the pen to discourage digging predators."

Super fantastic idea!

Some of the coop pages have great info on the run portions, but we really should have an easier way to find run-specific info. Maybe this is a good excuse to have another contest!!!

Thanks!

Woot ! Woot ! I'm all for it, yeah! One of the biggest problems we faced this year was design of proper
grow out pens. We didn't have grow out pens this year and improvised. Next season we will have them.
Best,
Karen

<groan> Another contest? I couldn't figure out how to do a coop page when I wanted to enter our coop. I couldn't get a story written for the writing contest because I didn't know how to get it posted where it was supposed to go. And I blew my chance to enter a chicken photo for the calendar because my eyes glazed over when I got to the "pixel sizing" instructions! But, no matter! I'll love looking at everyone's runs and maybe, just maybe, building one of them - if I ever get Ken to agree. HIM I know how to operate.

You guys are welcome to ask if you need help! We were all new and clueless once. Especially me, goodness, it took me MONTHS to figure out how to post links!

I got a PM asking for help today, so I put a mini create-a-page tutorial together here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...w-us-your-project-and-win/30_30#post_14270377
