I have my list of chicks that I would like for next year, but I want to buy them now, that way we get egg production by the end of spring, the problem is that most of the hatcheries are not selling now, is there any other way? or do I have to wait until February?

You can go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum to locate the Washington thread and post on it. Say what breeds you are seeking and ask if anyone has them. You can also browse through the BYC buy-sell-trade forum to see is anyone is offering what you want - or place an Wanted to buy ad. I believe some hatcheries sell point of lay birds, if they don't sell chicks at this time. You may still be able to get some breeds from "My Pet Chickens."

You can buy locally... but be VERY careful! I bought from a backyard farmer and what were supposed to be silkies turned out to be silkie mixes... that is NOT okay considering if my silkie wants to go broody I plan on letting her. I want to know exactly what my birds are so when and if there are chicks I can sell them knowing they are what I tell people they are!

Not to mention you have to worry about diseases and quality!

Check Ideal they seem to have some breeds later than other people. Look for a facebook group in your area and you can find people who breed and then you can ask for people to give you names and experiences, good and bad!

Thank you, i will look into it, i am already a member of chigen group on facebook. That is too bad that we can't count on people's honesty, with chicks as much as with any other baby animal.
