Hello

Have no idea how to get into the right section for asking this question but perhaps someone can tell me how :)

I live in New Zealand. We only have blue laced gold wyandottes and I am wanting to change them over to blue laced reds. So I need the mahogany gene and was thinking of using a rhode island red roo over blue laced gold hens. What do you think?

Or any other ideas of how I would achieve this?

You get into any forum thread the same way you did this one. Go to the " Chicken Breeds" forum. A menu will open to the right. You want to post on the "Genetics thread" Hope you find out what you want to know. Welcome to Backyard chickens.
 
Yes, RIR would work. Keep backcrossing mahogany expressing offspring to wyandottes until the lacing (and type) is back. Then you can intercross these already redder wyandotlings to get the mahogany pure for even more red expression.
 
Thanks my other option is to use a blue laced barnevelder? Would this be the faster route to go as the lacing should be there 100% of the time. I just find barnevelders a weaker breed (in my opinion) and have had high incidence of Mareks with offspring so was thinking of bypassing them and using the rir.

How many generations do you think it would take to get a blue laced red from this cross? I was thinking 3-4 should be well on the way to achieving provided I can get the comb right .

I don't think a Barnevelder will faster. You would need to breed out the penciling until you got back to lacing. Stick with the RIR.
