So my hubby grabbed our Americana last week & proceeded to check her over for any signs of bugs & she had a bad bald spot from over mating... So we are looking at her & she begins to CROW!! We were stunned! I was told it was a her & I just didn't think to verify via pictures online....
About a week after we got him/her we got another rooster not knowing we already had one. Our hen ratio was bad at that point & our australorp roo literally mated 2 birds to death. The funny part was at the time I thought the Americana was being over mated also, huge bald spot on back. Since then I've increased the number if hens but not knowing there were always 2 roosters, still need more hens!
Ever since the crowing incident, the alpha is aggressive twords the beta way more than ever before..But not hurting him anymore, just chasing him off & keeping him at a distance from the hens...
Was my australorp doing some chicken homosexual behavior cause there weren't enough hens or was that just him getting his butt kicked? Btw-- his feathers have grown back beautifully & he is way friendlier to me but the alpha will clearly defend the flock while my hunch is the beta will flee any fight....could the beta have just finally come into maturity & is just really challenging the alpha? They have been living together for almost 6 months. I love both roosters & it's taken time but I've finally gained the alpha role. I don't want to rehome (or cook) one but should I be worried about keeping them both? (Yep, my neighbors hate me! But if they kept their cat outta my yard, I wouldn't need a rooster!!)
Anyone have rooster pecking order wisdom to bestow upon me?
