Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Lots of nice breeds out there that are great on the laying, great with the kids and are winter hardy. Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Plymouth Barred Rocks, Wyandottes, ect....My Orps are huge on lap sitting, follow me around like drooling puppies and are very docile. Super hardy for cold and heat.

Take a look at this link. This chart will give you some quick info on the different breeds...http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html

Glad you joined us!

I would personally recommend the Wyandotte. In my experience, Wyandottes are docile, hardy birds that lay 250+ eggs per year. They have small combs and heavy feathering, making them hardy in cold weather, and they also tolerate heat well.

There are many other nice breeds to choose from, though. Some others that I'd recommend include Australorps, Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Rocks, Sex-links, Easter Eggers, and Sussex.

We're glad to have you.

The Wyandotte is my favorite breed that should fit most of your criteria. Mine have been very good layers of medium brown eggs, even though they are now four years old. Mine have easily withstood below zero temperatures. My Wyandottes have had very good temperaments and are the most personable of my birds.

X2 on the above posts.

Barred rocks, orpingtons, australorps, sussex and easter eggers are your best bet for that other breed. These chickens are all known for their friendliness and affection. Plus they lay large eggs regularly. They are good foragers and cold hardy. They love to be part of the family. Here is a great link on determining which breeds are best for you http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/which-breed-is-right-for-me.aspx

wow.thanks for the quick responses, very impressed, and yes I have questions, mostly on breeds,if someone just dropped off some birds id be very happy, however since I get to pick the breeds,im being tooooo picky,i really like the appenzellers, but I know their eggs are small,so im gonna pick another breed for the eggs, however not sure if my city girl of a wife will eat them, well she will eventrually, speckled sussex seem to be nice,so we will see,too many choices, gonna drive me crazy, plus I still gotta find a producer who ships to nova scotia, soo any help is appreciated....
