Went out to clean my quarantine hen house where my 28 hens are that I picked up free off Craigslist last week. They were very under weight so they are getting free choice (which is how i feed anyway) but one hen has started walking almost spastic like, tail is drooped down but when she walks she really seems to use it for balance. I have a video but it won't let me load it. However I would love to add one if anyone knows how to do it!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

You should not get any more chickens before you get your current ones healed. Fatten them up by making sure they have feed all the time. Give them foods such as oatmeal, mealworms, eggs and rice. (Treats should only take up 10% of their daily diet though.) Give them water with ACV or garlic. Here is a link on that. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...t-and-natural-ways-to-keep-your-flock-healthy

For your other hen, have you checked her feet? Does she have bumble foot? Here is a place to post in for info on how to heal her https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Once your flock is healthy and healed, you need to quarantine new chickens for at least three weeks. Then use the "see but don't touch" method for introducing them. This involves placing a barrier in between the two groups so they meet without have fights. Do this for about two weeks or more. Then take the barrier out and provide extra feeders and waterers. Here is a link on introducing.https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/adding-to-your-flock

Good luck!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Always worm new birds. Since they are coming from an unknown source, you have no idea of their condition. Use some Safeguard Liquid Goat wormer or some Valbazen and get them wormed first thing.

Safeguard Goat Wormer: 1/2 cc for large breeds, 1/4 cc for bantam types...Once a day for 3 days

Valbazen: Same dosage, once every 3 days for 9 days

If you see any respiratory ailments, get them on antibiotics. Sulfadimethoxine or Duramycin.

Check them all over for mites and get them dusted and sprayed. Get down to the skin and not just on top of the feathers. Concentrate around the vent, back of the neck and under the wings. Repeat in every 5 days for a few weeks.

Keep these birds quarantined away from all healthy birds for 30 full days after they have recuperated.

Glad you joined us!

The other posters have given you some good advice. I would definitely post in the Emergencies section; hopefully, members there can diagnose your hen's illness.

Good luck!

I hope she turns out okay.

I decided to cull her and take her in for necropsy today. They found 2 white spots on her liver and a possible enlargement of a nerve. Next step is to send it to a histopathologist.
