I have two female Muscovy that have just started laying eggs. I thought they were seasonal layers like geese? We also have a drake, so would these eggs be fertile? This is our first time raising ducks. Any help is appreciated!

Where in the world are you? like seasonally speaking. Mine have all ceased and usually do come fall and then resume Feb or later. They are seasonal but it can depend, i had a duck lay a few days ago but she spend the last few months brooding, raising young so that would explain it.

They could be fertile if you have a drake, have you seen any mating behaviour?

We are in southern California. It's finally starting to get cooler. I've seen the drake mating with the one duck we know IS laying the eggs. I don't know if I should let her keep the eggs, or if I should take them from the nest.

Is she acting broody? do you want ducklings? if not them of course take the eggs and eat them or bake something with them.

I wouldn't mind the ducklings. She's laid an egg and checked her nest daily. Today, she's sitting in it and not moving from it, so I'm guessing she's done laying. (At least that's how our geese acted, so that's what I'm going on.) I was just wondering if this was normal for them, because I had been told they were absolutely seasonal layers. She's about 7 months old.

So sounds like she maybe getting serious and it is unusual for my Muscovy's any that hatch say this year don't start to lay till following year usually around 8-9 months old. But you sure can't put them in a box and expect them all to act the same way that's for sure. So keep us updated and when ducklings hatch because of temps make sure she is doing all she can to keep them warm. being in So.Cal. your temps are probably still pretty nice but 35 days from now maybe not. How many eggs does she have?

Tricky, i mean i did have one set a nest in February, i am full on complete winter here with massive below temps and ice and snow... they clutch did live, and they thrived but was more involved than i would have chose to be and needed be.

Though, where you are the weather is much more pleasant, my birds actually continued to lay longer than they have previously but it was an odd summer very roller coaster. As ML said totally depends on how you feel, weather is so hard to predict, plus you will need to be sure she has a safe area for the babies, with no knowledge of the flocks behaviour with babies separation is recommend.

She's definitely sitting the nest since last Friday. Our weather right now is so crazy. It had been very pleasant but we dropped into the 30's these last couple of nights. We're bringing her food and water right now. Also, she chose a compost bin to nest in. I'm worried about moving her and the eggs, though.
