Compost questions

RichnSteph: Do you have access to hay bales? Room enough to make a couple of hay bale bins? They make the ultimate recycleable bin. by the time the compost is finished, they have become part of the compost.

We have room for them for sure and can probably source some cheap ones. I've never heard of a hay bale bin until now, thanks for the information. My only concern would be the amount of deer we have out here. At one time we had upwards of 30 showing up every night to eat the corn we put out and they also just about destroyed our flower beds and I'd be worried that they'd eat the bales up over the winter.

I'll look into it though. Thanks!

I think you are smart going with a three bin system. I wish I'd have gone with at least a two bin set up instead of the single we currently have.

Since you already have one bin, just scrounge up some left over lumber and make a single bin to go along with the one you already have. The only thing I bought was some screws and the wire to go around it. I had some left over hardware cloth but I wanted to keep it for future coop expansions.

Mine is not fancy at all, but it should do the job. I still need to put up one partition and get enough wood to cover the other two fronts.

My dad used welded wire to make his compost bins. He would make a couple of large circles near the pigeon pens and just use them. Worked great.

The deer won't bother those bales... at least that's been my experience.
