To cage or free range

Depending on your winter weather or wind you might want a covered roost. I am in Florida so I don't worry about them sleeping out in the rain even in the winter. They have higher roosts in their shelter but if they would rather sleep out in the rain I let them. Wild peafowl sleep out in the elements up in trees.

Now my green peacock will not be allowed to sleep out in the rain. I will only provide him with covered roosts since greens can be more cold sensitive.

As you have seen, if you provide them with uncovered roosts and covered roosts, they will most likely sleep on the uncovered roosts even in bad weather. I think some people's peafowl do sleep in the rafters of their barn, but for the most part they would rather be outside sleeping. So if you want them to be sheltered from the weather at night you can provide them with only covered shelters, close them into an indoor area for the night, or provide them with outdoor roosts only during warm weather and remove them for cold weather forcing them to sleep in the shelter.

We decided not to put outdoor roosts in our pens, that way they have to roost inside, out of the bad weather.
