Thanks, guys. I'm okay, really. Just a bit of a shock at first. I kinda expected something sooner or later with her. She persisted in laying eggs that were absolutely huge, and she wasn't a very big girl. I got one from here that was over 120 grams! No kidding! She is the second Red Sex Link I've lost to reproductive issues. Beatrice was always laying rubber eggs. She finally settled into more normal eggs, and while a rubber egg from a pullet now and again is no big deal, she just continued way past pullet age. Now Ida, with her giant eggs, has also been lost for the same kind of problems. I'd heard that that can be an issue, especially with hatchery birds. I just didn't expect to lose two of the same age to the same kind of thing.
It happens. It's part of raising chickens. I feel like LG does - if you are culling and the birds are providing meat for your family, that's one thing. But to have to cull a good layer because, well, because she's a good layer, that just seems backwards.
