got another dreaded call today from the same boy. "Mom, I was in a car accident"
He's okay, has some back strain and his left shoulder is hurting some, but overall things are manageable. He was driving our 2001 Corolla and was rear-ended by a 2003 minivan. I'm calling it the Clash of the Junkers
. Honestly can't see any damage to the Corolla, it already had some body damage as it's lived a colorful life. Boy thinks the van slipped under the rear of the car and raised it up some. Whatever happened broke the driver seat, it's now permanently reclined and won't sit back upright. So, he got whipped back and forth pretty good I'm thinking.
I'm not sure who he was talking to that put this in his head, or if it's just a severe case of BoyBrain, but he got it in his head that any insurance money on the Corolla will be his money.
I have no idea why he thinks this. The Corolla is not his, he's not paying any insurance premiums yet, but he sure feels that's his money. We've made it clear on no uncertain terms that is NOT his money, now I have Sullen Teenage Boy. Well, could be Hospitalized Teenage Boy, so overall I can handle some silent treatment lol.

Rachel, glad that he is OK. Sullen teenage boy - not at all unusual. He will soon add SORE to that description. Princess and I were rear ended once when she was about 8.9 months pregnant. Guy who slid into us turned apoplexic when he saw her 'condition'. We were fine, old station wagon wasn't hurt so we just headed on home - remember the non-litigious , good old days? Next morning we both had neck and back pain.
So glad he's okay - of all the things that can come out of a car accident, sullen is a far easier one to fix! I know that first hand.
Glad the kiddo is OK, even if he is being, well, a child about it. I don't know what idjit came up with the idea that money from the insurance company is some sort of "prize," but it sure as heck ain't! With vehicles as old as you describe, I'd be surprised if you get enough to fix/replace the seat.

It's those stupid billboards that say,' So-and-so Shyster got me a 400,000 award!'
Yea. lawyer kept 600,000 and the 'winner' gets to limp through the rest of his life unable to work and in pain.
400,000 is five days in the hospital.
If there is insurance money tell him it goes to fixing the car, and if it isn't enough, then he will have to cough up the rest.
Reality bites.
Beware that STB may have some lingering issues that you weren't anticipating: He may have a mild concussion, even though there was no loss of consciousness. The brain gets slammed around in an accident like that: he could have some head aches, perhaps some mood changes, some forgetfullness, decreased coordination. Also, neck and back issues can become problematic. I'm still paying for getting rear ended 33 years ago. My neck will never be the same again. I was much younger then, and the stiffness/pain went away, but left tell tale issues that plague me now, and probably always will. I have to be super vigilant with neck alignment.Sheesh.

Our agent told us to wait 24 hours to see if the other person starts a claim, if not then to start one ourselves. I honestly have no idea what the value of the car would be, but to us it's priceless. It's beat up, yes, but it runs like a champ, gets 33 mpg, it's paid for with a lifetime oil change, and it's distinctive enough the boys can't get by with much driving it cause folks will call me and tell me what they're doing in my poor beat up car
. I know we could buy another beater, but we know all the history on this baby, what's been done to it and what it needs done. I really don't want to replace it, I've had that car longer than two of my boys. We'll just see what the adjuster says.
