Do chickens get colds? UPDATE

I do think VetRX has oregano oil in it doesn't it? While not actually an antibiotic like a prescription drug, it is a natural antibiotic. I've actually seen several articles lately on using it in chickens and that it even kills resistant MRSA. So I think there is more to it, but otherwise I totally agree. Here is one of those articles, but there are many others http://grist.org/list/chicken-farmers-replace-antibiotics-with-oregano-oil/

This is the label. Of course, origanum is oregano oil. Garlic also has natural antibiotic properties, however, those are more in the preventative/prophylactic category, for boosting overall general health than for treating a severe disease outbreak. JMHO. I give my chickens minced garlic and cayenne pepper, plus olive oil and probiotics and vitamins for their general health, but if they actually broke out with something bacterial and I decided to treat, I'd use antibiotics (if it was non-contagious). If you're dealing with a virus, all bets are off since they can't be treated with antibiotics, natural or otherwise. I'm sure I'll be lambasted for it, but I'm a bit perturbed when someone says, "Oh, my chicken has a cold so I gave her grapeseed oil". Well, it didn't hurt her, certainly, but it didn't cure her disease, either. Naturally, it wasn't a "cold", plus she's still a carrier.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I have a Marans who I have made threads about. He is sneezing but doesn't have any other respiratory infection signs. He has a smell to him but he is dirty, and has lice and is dirty ( I think before I got he was kept with a lot of chickens in his previous home.) He eats fine, and free ranges so I think he is fine, :idunnoBut a second opinion is not hurtful.

If he has lice, get rid of them. There is no reason to let him go on with lice-those will make his health suffer and make him anemic. If his head smells, he could have Coryza or maybe he needs a good bath (with complete blowdry and be kept inside B4 allowing him out in the cold). Sneezing alone can be too much ammonia in his environment, reaction to dust or a lot of other things, in absence of other symptoms.

I euthanized him because I did not know wat was going on. He is in chicken heaven know.

What is IB? I just bought 3 new hens from a farm yesterday, woke up this morning to find one of them sick...she wont open one eye and the other has bubbly snot like on it. Any suggestions to what this is? None of the chickens showed signs of it at the farm, so I am wondering if the stress of the move and change in temperature brought it on (she was in a huge greenhouse at the farm and just outside here at my house). I had her and the two new ones in a large dog crate to keep them separate but they still could have breathed on my girls who were curious and around the crate.
