I have now lost 6 chickens to an "unknown" predator. The lot is fenced really good, top covered with netting but still having some loss. There are only 2 possibilities that I can come up with at this time. Do guineas kill chickens? I know they torment them by pulling feathers but would they take off heads? There is a possibility a weasel might get through some areas of 2x4 wire and we killed one a few years ago. We live with woodland behind pen and lake within a mile. All chickens had the heads removed and bodies left. I know that is owl or weasel type killing and an owl cannot get into the area. There have been two chickens killed each time and those were chickens that roosted in the open area of the pen instead of inside the house and they were the smaller breeds of chicken. Any help appreciated. Also, if you think weasel, how do I trap them?

Sounds like owl to me. Weasels do more spree killing but it could be.

Weasels are fairly straight forward to catch. Build you a "weasel box", basically a closed container with a weasel sized hole on one or two ends. Inside the box directly in front of the hole set a large rat trap (the victor large yellow pans work best) or #0 long spring. Bait with fresh meat inside the box but not on the trap(s). Here's some ideas.

Be sure to check your local regs. I know south of you in Alabama weasels are a protected species and in your Tennessee footholds (the #0 is a foothold) have to have padded jaws unless used within a cubby (a weasel box is a cubby) and here in my state of Georgia anyone who sets a trap for a fur bearer for any reason must be licensed including homeowners protecting livestock but the Georgia DNR does issue free licenses for that situation but don't take just my word but know the law yourself.
