So, as you know, our birds are our babies and we take them up north with us, all 3 hours and 15 minutes every time. Anyway, we came up last night, when it was dark, and found 3 inches of snow on the ground, to which they immediately disliked, so we brought them in the house. We have tile in front of the front door, so we put a baby gate(the kind you add panels to) in front of the door with puppy pads and they LOVE watching us walk about the house, watch the fire in the fire place and they even think the tv is fun LOL

In the summer, they stay in the garage in the baby pen, but it was so cold out, they hadn't had dinner yet and we just decided to let them in.

This morning, I got their pool out, filled it with warm water, put their food, and fresh lettuce and corn on the cob out. I took a shovel and shoveled an area around the pool for them to eat grass and walk on. They kept sitting and tucking their feet up. Well, they swam for about 5 minutes, then were back on the porch staring in the front door. They stayed on the front porch, pecking at the glass of the door for an hour until I went out and chased them off the porch. I encouraged them to get back in the pool and walk around for a little while, but then they would sit and tuck their feet up. By 3:00 in the afternoon, Lucy's foot was really pink and she kept standing on the other foot and tucking the pink one up.

They never ate their food outside, and just seemed miserable. They wouldn't leave the porch area and were actually trying to get in the front door.

So, I let them in were I did last night. As soon as they were in, I gave them the same food that was outside and some water and they ate like crazy!! Then after they ate, they both fell asleep and they are out cold! We have the tv on, we are walking around, the fire in the fireplace is crackling and they have been sleeping for an hour. They started out standing like flamingos with their necks tucked behind them, then they both sat and continued to sleep. Obviously, this can't happen every day!

This is our up north home, we are going home tomorrow. At our main house, they go out all day in their pen, then I bring them in the garage to their pen at night. They do not come in our home.

My concern is, why is the snow bothering them so much? I thought they were fine to walk/stand on snow. Why would her foot turn so pink? It was obviously bothering her.

They have been outside fine each day, but we haven't had any snow at our other house yet either. If I leave them out their with pink/painful feet, will they be ok? I really don't know what to do?

That's what I thought too! But Lucy's foot started turning bright pink and she was slightly limping. She would stand and tuck that foot into her feathers. Moose just plain would plop down and tuck both feet under.

Why would their feet be so sensitive?

My geese or ducks really don't care for snow or ice. they stand around with one foot tucked up under their feathers or lay on them. of course I can't bring in 4 geese and 13 ducks so they have to manage, I have places for them to get under or behind to stay out of the brutal wind and they have access to their house all day but stay outside.
Amanda 39, your babies are spoiled, they would probably get use to being out if you left them out but If I only had the 2 I'd probably cave and bring mine in too. But they'd have to be in a Xlarge dog crate since I have 5 dogs in my house.

Lydia, you hit the nail on the head! I only have 2 and they mean the world to us! It will be an interesting winter for sure! I took some adorable pictures today of them sleeping in the house, OMG, they were so happy to come in and just be around us.

I am concerned about Lucy's foot though. Why did it get so pink?

I wish I could post cell phone pictures on here.

Aww I'd love to see the pics. How does Lucy foot look now? I have seen my water fowls feet get pretty red too, but so far no frost bite mainly because they spends alot of time when it's extremely cold laying on their feet and legs. Last year was a big test and only a couple of my Muscovys got frost bite on their fleshy faces and it was just a little, I did try and keep vaseline on the parts that got frost bite too. No one had it on their feet though. I hope you can pull up this link it explains about water fowl and their feet and legs. I think it's so sweet that ya'll have such a good relationship with your geese, I love mine to pieces but can't imagine the 4 of them inside with us.

Thank you so much Lydia! I think I'm just being a worry wart! I'm sure they will do well this winter, but, you know, an excuse to bring them in LOL

I was able to get my pictures from my phone!

What a beautiful place I'd want to be inside too. They look so sweet and very much part of your family.

Mine would be over that child gate/fence and chasing dogs around the house in a heart beat.
