Listless hen with object protruding from vent

Are you brave? If so, take a razor and cut into it a little bit (stop if it bleeds), but I suspect it won't. To me it looks like hardened pus. If it is pus, it needs to be removed.

I haven't seen a lot of prolapses except for many, many pictures of them here on BYC. But this looks like a prolapse that has been outside for some time, and has become infected or has dried out. When the drying out happens, the tissue can die or infection can set in. I would be inclined to do shallow warm epsom salt soaks just to the vent area (and not let her get chilled by running a heater in the bathroom.) Then each day after her soak I would try to scrub off the tan tissue until the pink tissue shows through. This will be painful, but I would stop if it starts to bleed very much. Than I would put some antibiotic ointment on the tissue. Just remember that the more it is scrubbed, the faster her skin can heal. Make sure she is dried thoroughly after each soak. I'm not brave but she needs help. I'll try both cutting it out along with the soak and scrub. Thanks so much. I'm getting queasy just thinking about it. I'll keep you posted.

I cut off a lot of it. No blood, puss or foul smell. It looks just like baked chicken. While trying to get up into her vent without cutting the wrong thing, she sucked the remaining piece back up and I can't get to it. I'm really concerned about that piece still inside her. She's still able to poop but her abdomen is a little swollen. She's resting now and I'll keep checking to see if that piece pops back out. I don't know what else to do.

It's way up in her vent where I can't reach it. this morning she was more vocal with some spunk but there was blood in her vent. She's not crying out in pain. I don't know what to do. She's still in a warm crate in my bedroom just sitting there looking around.

If its not getting better and you don't have answers looks like its the vet or put it down?
