Can you use only a ceramic heat lamp in the brooder? Having a light on all the time doesn't seem to be very natural.

I use Brinsea Eco glow brooders for my chicks. So no you don't have to just have heat lamps. I find them a good alternative, they are cheaper on electric than lamps and there is less risk of fire with them. The chicks also love acctually feeling the heat on their backs when they go under them. They often stand just with heads poking out the front. The only down side is you can't see them when they sleep under it. At night though they are quiet because when the house lights are turned off they go to sleep, therefore their sleep routine is not affected.

I use a CHE or a red heat lamp bulb. I have used regular bulbs when we had nothing else with no bad effects, but i like to let them have time without a blaring white light.
