Everyone is going through their first adult molt. Everyone but this one has been doing a hard molt. Except for a few tail feathers, this one hen doesn't even look like she's molting. She was the first to start molting though but it's been an easy one. She started well over a month ago. Since I've had her, she's been a good layer when she's not broody. She gets broody quite often but hasn't been since the summer.

She still egg squats for me, but I'm not getting any eggs. My yard is pretty bare so it's easy to search for hidden nests. I haven't found any.
In September, I added two new birds to the flock. I'd think she'd be over it by now? I thought about confining her to see if she's laying but wonder if that would end up making her quit laying?

Hello!

I doubt that your issue is the new birds which were added. Whilst that can certainly cause a delay in laying she should have recovered from that. Likewise, if you think her moult is over that shouldn't stop her from laying either, although it can take some time to resume laying after a moult.

There are a lot of reasons that could be affecting her ability to lay. Disease, nutrition, stress, age? I am wondering though what season you are in at the moment. We are in Spring here, but if you are heading into Winter and your days are becoming shorter, the lessening daylight could most certainly contribute to non-laying. Unless additional lighting is provided it is quite common for chickens to take a break over Winter.

Hi!
I'm going into winter. Do they continue to egg squat when they aren't laying?
She's nice and healthy.
Thank you for responding. :)
