I have a Splash Cochin that for some reason has decided to bury her eggs. In the front of the coop we have a bunch of straw and of course they have decided to nest there. Whenever i go over there and dig up the eggs she comes running over and begins to bite me. Does anyone know why shes doing this? Shes about 9 months old and has recently started laying. We also just got over a terrible cold spell in colorado but i dont know if that has anything to do with it.

Any chance she could be planning on hatching a little family - AKA has she gone broody on you?

Some birds are more inclined than others to do so, and I seem to recall reading that Cochins often get the Motherly urge.

Is she exhibiting any other broody symptoms? Sitting on the nest for extended periods? Puffing up her feathers? Growling? Walking around like she got out of the wrong side of the bed every day? If so, that may be your issue.

She like to hang out with the silkie Roos and lot of times she sits on her nest but it isnt permanent. She hasnt growled, she just bites me when i come to get the eggs.
