Drake with Bumblefoot

*UPDATED TO ADD PICTURE* My white crested drake has bumblefoot. It is pretty large, about the size of a marble on his heel. There have been no symptoms until yesterday when I noticed him limping. He is inside now in a large wire dog crate. I have soaked his feet in epsom salts and warm water to get all of the crusties and dirt off. I plan to take and post pics later.

The advice I got from a vet, because the bumble is large, was to try corn and callous remover. She said to soak for as long as he will stand still, clean area with alcohol, apply corn remover and wrap. Repeating this once a day. Has anyone ever tried the corn remover? It's main ingredient is salicylic acid.

He is doing well. He's not happy to be away from his girls, he's in my family room and was talking to me all day while I cleaned house. I did 2 soaks yesterday and applied the corn and callous remover once. I have been all over town, no clear iodine to be found. I'm going to order some online. Today I did another soak and applied more. I am only putting it on the dark spot, not the normal looking skin. I am going to do another soak tomorrow, but only put the meds on every other day. This evening when I was cleaning his house I noticed that there is a scab and the edge is beginning to peel a bit. I'm going to let it (the scab) get loose, then try removing it, and hopefully the core will be easy to remove.

I put Qwackers in a bin while I clean his house. If I let him walk around he scares my dog

Tonight my husband kept him busy with his favorite treat, tomatoes!

That is adorable. And sounds like the corn remover is beginning to work. hopefully you'll be able to pull the scab off and get the bumble out without any problems . Qwackers is just so cute.
 
Qwackers is not his normal self today. He didn't put up his normal fuss when I handled him to soak his foot and clean his crate. I don't know if he is sad about being in the crate, or feeling bad from the foot infection. He is also standing with his bumble foot in the air, not putting any weight on it. I have found a local vet that treats ducks and made him an appointment for 9am tomorrow.

The appointment is only $50, but I am concerned about the additional costs. Rationally speaking how much do you spend on vet bills for a duck? To me he just isn't any duck, but I have to be realistic. My son rescued a dog a couple of months ago, she was beaten, nearly starved and had tons of problems. I have spent about a thousand dollars getting her healthy and we're not finished yet. Her heart worms are gone, but she still has to have more vaccinations and get spayed. Hoping that tomorrows appointment for Qwacks goes well and there is a simple and inexpensive fix

I imagine it's painful, and it the infection can spread too but hopefully that hasn't happened. Vets are expensive period but I have never taken any of my flock to one. Have you looked into the shelter there and see if you can get a reduced rate for spaying and vaccines. we rescued a dog once and even though I didn't get him at the shelter I was able to get low cost neuter and vaccines.
Hopefully this vet will be able to treat once and keep costs low. Let us know

She cleaned the bumble, applied silvadine cream and wrapped it. He is on antibiotics for a week, then recheck and cold laser treatments. I don't necessarily agree with the vet about not removing the scab and core of the bumble, but we'll see how her treatment goes. She also said that it was because of the hard surface in his run. I use sand, and in between cleanings they do pack it down with their wide feet. I'm going to have to rethink the flooring in the run...
Here he is with his bandaged foot. At least it matches his unwrapped foot.
 
Glad you got a vet's help. Sometimes bumblefoot just gets out of hand. The antibiotics sounds like a good idea, too. And he could be blue, since his routine is blown to smithereens right now.
 
Bless his heart, I agree about the vet visit. she is taking a cautious approach and hopefully the treatment and antibiotics will get it under control. is there anyway you can take him over for visit and leave him in the dog crate just so everyone can say hi, might perk him up
