Here is the link that I posted relate various traps from my experience. You should able to use trap. Just make or buy a box 2-5 times larger than the trap and put over the trap. Of course, you need to cut few holes at the bottom big enough for the rat to enter, but keep the chicken out.

I thought oh boy! But she's the least of my worries. The male cat sort of adopted us when we bought the place. He must have been around chicks and people before. Actually, if I have company who brings their dogs with them, he will attack the dogs if they go near the chicken barn. Lol ! Too funny! Yet he don't bother with our dogs. Smart cat.
